Painting #4: Self-Portrait

This is the photo I will be painting for my self-portrait.

Mapping out shapes and features.

Adding the skin color and defining facial features.

Making the skin more realistic to the photo and adding shading the the jacket.

Creases added to shirt.

Darkening the lips and adding more detail to the hat.

Painting #3: First Portraiture

Here is the portrait I will paint. I plan to crop the bottom half so I will lay my canvas horizontally.

Mapping out the facial features + adding the background color and shirt color

Mapping out the range of colors for her skin + defining the facial features

Adding hair color

Darkening the darkest darks...

Attempting to blend the darks... looks very muddy! Started to define the features of the shirt as well.

Adding in more color to the hair.

Smoothing out the skin.

Re-darking the darks. Adding more detail and shading to shirt.
Warming up and blending the skin colors together. I will have to go back and add more darks because she 's starting to look washed out. I also reshaped the lips which I plan to add more detail to when the paint is more dry. I am starting to like the shading around her neck, but need to add more of that to the right side of her face and under the eyes.

Painting #2: COLOR COLOR COLOR!

Composition Set-Up

Mapping out the objects.

Starting to color match. Adding in creases and folds in the fabric.

Continuing to color match and blocking out the rest of the objects, but avoiding the shells because I HAVE NO IDEA HOW TO DEAL WITH THOSE.

Starting to define the edges of the class bottle.

Adding various colors to the copper mug. This was tricky to color match.

Adding shading to the objects sitting on the table, and adding the metal framing to the box.

Starting to deal with the shells....

I decided to add the words to the bottle's label because I thought the painting looked unfinished without it. Also adding highlights to the bottle bring it to life.

Darkening the shadows on the table, and continuing to add more detail to the shells.

Painting #1: Black and White Composition

This painting was a challenge for me because I have never worked with oil paints before (or any paint for that matter). The more time I spent on this painting, the more I learned how oil paints work and blend. I noticed myself painting the objects how I envision them looking at first, but towards the I end I found myself painting more organically. I painted what I really saw instead of what I thought I saw.

Composition Set-Up

Mapping out the composition using a thin layer of oil paint.

Blocking out each object.

Adding more value to each object.

Defining the table by adding creasing and highlights along the edges.

Starting to define the leaves.

Adding highlights to the lantern.

Finished Painting
I captioned the final photo "Finished Painting," but when is a painting truly complete? I definitely could add more detail, value, and highlights to my final painting, but overall I am happy with my work considering this was my first painting.
